What is the purpose of the RHI?
The government says: "The objective of the Renewable Heat Incentive is to increase significantly the proportion of heat that is generated from renewable sources and, by encouraging a switch from fossil fuels, contribute towards our wider carbon reduction goals. We recognise that one of the most significant barriers preventing take-up is the higher costs of renewable heating technologies, compared with fossil fuel equivalents. Even where an organisation wants to install a renewable heating source, often it is deemed too expensive. The RHI will compensate for this additional cost, which will help make renewable heating an option for all."
In the first phase, long-term tariff support is targeted in the non-domestic sectors, at the big heat users – the industrial, business and public sector – which contribute 38% of the UK's carbon emissions. The First Phase of the RHI will apply to all non-domestic buildings.
Ofgem opened its website to applications for RHI on 28 November 2011.
The Renewable Heat Incentive has been introduced to incentivise the installation of ground source energy, and other renewable heating technologies like solar thermal collection, into buildings.
